Why greener homes grant was created:
Buildings, including homes, account for 18% of Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. With the new Greener Homes Grant, the federal government aims to encourage Canadians to make their homes more energy efficient, more comfortable and more affordable, while supporting environmental goals of reducing carbon emissions.
Canada's Greener Homes 2021 initiative was created to help homeowners increase the energy efficiency of their homes, create new jobs for energy consultants across Canada, expand the country's green supply chain and fight against climate change.
Eligibility for the greener homes grant in canada:
Eligible Canadian homeowners can apply for a grant of up to $5000 to improve the energy efficiency of their primary residence. Only one owner per accommodation can be registered.
Accessing federal funds is a slightly different process across provinces. We will discuss both the Ontario and Quebec programs in this article. The government is also working to bring the concept and reality of green homes to a wide range of Canadians, including those living in remote and northern communities and those with limited access to the internet. These grants are available to help homeowners upgrade their homes to be more energy-efficient. The following upgrades fall in that category: Adding insulation, more efficient heating, better windows, solar panels, and more.
Ontario Program:
Enbridge
Home Efficiency Rebate Program is an initiative undertaken by Enbridge Gas to motivate all Ontarian homeowners to utilize energy efficiency practices and gadgets in their living spaces. If you qualify, you can get up to $5000 in Enbridge rebates for home renovations. Included here but not limited to are Insulation system improvements, highly efficient doors and windows, skylights, boiler, furnace, etc. Eligibility for Enbridge rebates is automatically earned if you are a Union Gas or Enbridge Gas consumer. The main focus of these Enbridge rebates is to courage Ontarian homeowners to lower the Carbon Footprint and apply more cost-efficient practices in their living spaces.
Steps to apply
The process begins with one energy efficiency audit of your home before the renovations start. The audit should be done by registered energy advisors who are capable to conduct a pre-renovation energy audit.
Instructed by the energy advisors, choose the home energy improvements that fit your home needs.
Have a professional contractor perform all of the chosen renovations.
A post-renovation energy audit must be conducted within 120 days from the pre-renovation audit to check the performance and efficiency of the new upgrades.
Remember to keep the receipts for all services and submit all the required paperwork on the Enbridge Rebates website.
Expect to receive the rebate cheque by mail in nearly 60 days.
Quebec Programs:
RénoClimat
The Rénoclimat program is intended to encourage renovation work aimed at reducing the energy consumption of a home while improving its comfort.
Unlike the RénoVert program, this is not a tax credit, but rather financial assistance that you will receive 6 to 8 weeks after a Rénoclimat advisor-evaluator has carried out a second energy assessment of your home.
NovoClimat 2.0
The Novoclimat 2.0 program encourages the construction of new homes with high energy performance. These houses must be built by contractors certified Novoclimat 2.0 by the Bureau de normalization du Québec. Their Novoclimat 2.0 approval confirms their superiority in terms of energy.
These houses are inspected, tested and delivered with government approval confirming their energy superiority. They guarantee more comfort for future occupants and significantly improved indoor air quality.
Novoclimat 2.0 approved houses obtain estimated savings of 20% on energy costs compared to a new house built according to current regulations.
ÉconoLogis
Éconologis is a free energy efficiency service offered to owners and tenants with modest incomes. It allows you to benefit from free personalized advice to improve your energy consumption, and even offer the installation of electronic thermostats.
Depending on what you home requires, your advise will be be able to recommend simple but effective solutions such as caulking windows, weather stripping at the bottom of doors, insulating electrical outlets located on exterior walls, and ventilation panels in attic.
